Do I Need a Primer?

Do I Need a Primer?

Do you need a primer? Yes ma’am! I have become a primer junkie and want to share why along with some of my favs. There are multiple types of primers and knowing how and when to use them will help your makeup go on better and stay longer.

Shadow Primer
This type of primer will ensure your shadow goes on evenly and stay put without creasing. This is a must for any shadows. I love the Urban Decay shadow primers and also Maybelline color tattoos for this purpose.

Lash Primer
A good lash primer will lengthen and condition your lashes for a coat of your favorite mascara. I love the Clinique lash primer and the Laura Geller primer, and this one is black so you don’t have to worry about covering up the white like other primers.

Lip Primer
I didn’t know a lip primer was helpful until recently. I absolutely love using one now. Using a lip primer will smooth and prep your lips for an even application of any lippie and help with it’s staying power! My current favs are Urban Decay ozone lip primer and the Colour Pop lip primer.

Foundation Primer
Oh what a difference I have noticed with wearing a foundation primer! This type of primer will make your face velvety smooth and ready for foundation. My foundation goes on even, smooth, and lasts longer. I love Mally’s face prep, Too Faced If you have oily skin or want a matte finish, try the Too Faced or NYX Shine Killer. There are primers for all kinds of skin concerns like redness, oiliness, blemishes, dryness, etc. Make sure you find one perfect for your skin!

What are your favorite primers and why?

  • Agreed! I can't live without eyeshadow primer! Talk about a game-changing discovery. Before, I just dealt with creasing like it was part of the makeup-wearing experience! My 2 faves are NARS Smudge Proof and Laura Mercier Eye Basics. For face, my oily skin reacts very badly to silicone primers, producing oil at rates unseen since my teenage days. The only one that's worked well and hasn't added to the oil slick woes was Too Faced Hangover Rx, which is silicone free and very light.

  • I don't have super oily skin, luckily, but I do want to try the Too Faced hangover for super humid/hot days. What foundation do you like the best for oily days?

  • Great overview on primers! I LOOOOOVE Urban Decay's Eyeshadow primer. It's a MUST. Like Kristen writes, I used to struggle with creasing like it was part of the whole experience! I really want to get my hands on the NARS Smudge Proof but I'm broke-city-lady so even the Urban Decay primer is a splurge for me. I've got such oily lids! My face on the other hand doesn't really require primer. I LOVE the Too Faced Hangover Rx and wanted to try the NYX Shine-Free one you mentioned.. I have a lip primer stick from Julep, which I'm on the fence about. I have been wanting to experiment with priming my lips and if a lip-designated one is necessary or if you can get away using just a generic face primer. I'd probably try Ozone because of my luck with UD's eye primer… WOW what a comment, sorry!! Hahah!

    Much LOVE!!

  • Thanks! I'd love to try the Julep lip primer. Do you get the Maven box? I'm thinking about starting another subscription box, any suggestions? You'd love the UD Ozone.
